Believe it or not, this is where I went to GIVE BLOOD today. Yes, The American Red Cross was having a blood drive at this amazingly ornate Hindu temple near us. This place is less than 10 minutes from our house. There was a big banner outside on the fence inviting people - but - we still weren't sure it was okay for "outsiders" to drive in through the security gate.
If you visit us, we can take you to tour this temple. It is fascinating. When you see how intricately everything is carved, it will blow your mind to learn they do it all by hand in India. It takes years! Then, the many pieces are shipped here and it takes a couple MORE years to assemble them all. (I was treated to a mini info session at the snack table courtesy of a very friendly Hindu man.)
Another interesting fact: The Red Cross lady who drew my blood pointed out a curtain in the corner. She told me that was where they had set up a couple beds for any Hindu priests who wished to donate blood. They would enter and exit from behind that curtain because they are not allowed to see any women.
Tatum had planned to donate with me, but she did not have her photo ID - just her Life Source donor card that is apparently specific to Chicago.. She was bummed, but already knows where the upcoming blood drives are in our area this week. (Just none at fancy such a location!)
